If you experience any of the following, you may be experiencing Weight Loss Resistance:
Here is what I hear: “Over the years, there were times I gained weight. Then I did X, Y, or Z and it came off pretty easily. But now I have gained weight and I do X, Y, and Z, and it does not take the weight off, it can even make it worse!”
Does some variation of that sound familiar to you? Things have changed. And no, it is not because you are older.
Sometimes that shift is due to an illness like a viral infection, or a round of anti-biotics, a medication, a hormonal issue, a trauma, multiple ups and downs in weight, or just unintentional lifestyle abuse.
Here is what I think is going on:
Before you can add on body fat you have to max out the sugar stores you have in your muscles and liver. When that happens your liver will start making fat and storing it in the liver itself.
This process is called denovolipogenesis…..Denovo (new) lipo (fat) genesis (creation). This is what makes body fat, NOT eating dietary fat.
As that happens the liver function is decreased and more of that fat will spill over to the pancreas, then to the viscera in your abdomen. As both the liver swells and the visceral fat builds it eventually effects the kidneys.
This process interferes with the organs ability to function well and will throw off your metabolism since your heart, kidneys, and liver drive over 70% of your metabolic energy use.
It is driven by carb (sugar and grains) consumption and mediated by insulin.
Insulin is the fat storage hormone. It takes sugar and stores it in the muscle and liver and then makes and stores fat. Insulin does not bring sugar into body tissue cells for use as energy as we are told. And energy production goes down as insulin does its job.
So, how do I change things back so that I can burn off my extra body fat?
First you have to become glycogen (sugar storage) flexible again opening up space in the muscle and liver for stored sugar to move in and out.
Then you have to stop the denovolipogenesis and break down the fat in the liver primarily and in time the pancreas and viscera.
Then you have to start using fat as fuel, or become an efficient fat burner.
Then as you have done all this and the liver, pancreas and kidneys all get back to normal function, you will start to lose body fat.
Have no doubt, it is “working” and working hard, and could be saving your life whether you are losing weight in the moment or not. And in time, when things change again, the weight will come off.
There is no way around this process. Try and side step any part and you might shift 10-12 lbs (mostly water) but get stuck again or see weight gain from the efforts that used to help you lose it.
Things have changed. Time to change them back. It can be done.
Don’t give up my friends, we can do better!
